Online Microdialysis-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MD-HPLC-ICP-MS) as a Novel Tool for Sampling Hexavalent Chromium in Soil Solution

Conventional soil solution sampling of species-sensitive inorganic contaminants, such as hexavalent chromium (CrVI), may induce interconversions due to disruption system equilibrium. The temporal resolution that these methods afford also be insufficient capture dynamic interactions or require time-consuming and expensive analysis. Microdialysis (MD) is emerging a minimally invasive passive method in environmental science, permitting the determination solute fluxes concentrations at previously unobtainable spatial scales time frames. This article presents first use MD coupled high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) for continuous simultaneous detection CrVI solution. performance criteria were assessed using stirred solutions; good repeatability measurement (RSD < 2.5%) was obtained CrVI, with limit 0.2 ?g L–1. online MD-HPLC-ICP-MS setup applied native three soils differing geochemical properties. sampled analyzed fresh 15 min intervals, offering improved significant reduction analysis over offline MD. Simple modifications chromatographic conditions could resolve additional analytes, powerful tool study systems inform research into nutrient availability soil-to-plant transfer potentially harmful elements.
